Sarah Ellerby spared us a few minutes out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions Can you tell me a bit about yourself, where you grew up, how you started to play pool and when? I'm from a town called Pickering in North Yorkshire, England. I was brought up on my mum and dad's family farm. My dad was also a race horse trainer for over 17 years but retired around 9 years ago and now they raise cattle for beef. My Brother, Robert (33) is a builder and has just started his own company, www.rehutches.com It was my brother who introduced me to pool when I was about 11 years old. He wanted to become a Professional Snooker Player. I started playing with him at home on our 7ft table that he got for Christmas and I became hooked. Robert is a very naturally talented player and what we call in the UK, a disher! He would beat me so bad that I just got angry and practiced for hours a day to get better, until I could beat him. It went from there......Local pub team to playing for my county, then Region and onto the England team for 8 yrs. I've won multiple titles for english 8-ball including World Team titles and European singles titles. There's just too much politics in the UK, that's why I came to the USA. When you take a shot is it entirely technical or is it also to do with feel for the shot? I'm a leftie, so for me, I play by feel. Leftie play different to RH players. Sometimes you need the technical part as a backup. Do you use any specific techniques for practice? Well, up to know I haven't been but I will be scheduling my practice time a little more efficiently. I work on all aspects of my game but need to be more disciplined with my sessions without taking the fun away, although I love to learn and test new things, which I'm doing right now. What's your favorite pool film? Color of Money - I just wish they would go away from the old look of pool and in movies. Now pool is a very young, hip, game with a huge white collar following and I don't think we need to see a movie with scenes in a pool room, because it always portrays a bad image. Do you think that a good physical exercise such as golf or running helps a person play pool? Yes, I do! A lot of people don't see us as Professional Athletes but we are. I'm at the gym twice a day. I'm getting ready to run my second half marathon at WALT Disney World in Jan 2005, so I take my training very seriously. I eat healthy and that makes me feel healthy. This is a big part of your performance, I believe. If you have 5 or 6 matches in one day, you need to me fit but also be mentally trained and golf does that part for me. What do you think of snooker? If you want to watch phenomenal play, then watch some snooker. These players are the most talented athletes in all cue sports. I like to watch snooker more than pool, specially the leftie players. The current world Champion, Ronnie O'Sullivan plays mainly right handed but he's as talented as a leftie. Find out more about Sarah Ellerby at www.sarahellerby.com |
